Every app icon size you need in 2025
Both Apple and Google require specific icon sizes for their app stores. If you submit the wrong sizes, your app gets rejected. Here's the full list, updated for the current requirements.
iOS icon sizes
Apple simplified their requirements a few years ago. You now need one 1024x1024 image for the App Store listing, and the system generates the rest. But if you're setting up Xcode manually or want to include specific sizes, here's what each context uses:
| Context | Size (px) |
|---|---|
| App Store listing | 1024 x 1024 |
| iPhone home screen (@3x) | 180 x 180 |
| iPhone home screen (@2x) | 120 x 120 |
| iPad Pro | 167 x 167 |
| iPad | 152 x 152 |
| Spotlight (@3x) | 120 x 120 |
| Spotlight (@2x) | 80 x 80 |
| Settings (@3x) | 87 x 87 |
| Settings (@2x) | 58 x 58 |
| Notification (@3x) | 60 x 60 |
The 1024x1024 version is the one that matters most. Apple uses it to generate smaller sizes automatically. Make sure your design looks clear at that scale and doesn't rely on fine details that disappear at 29x29.
Android icon sizes
Android uses adaptive icons, which have a foreground layer and a background layer. The system can then mask them into circles, squircles, or rounded squares depending on the device manufacturer. The foreground image should be 432x432 with the actual content in the center 66% (about 288x288) to avoid clipping.
| Context | Size (px) |
|---|---|
| Play Store listing | 512 x 512 |
| Adaptive icon (foreground) | 432 x 432 |
| xxxhdpi | 192 x 192 |
| xxhdpi | 144 x 144 |
| xhdpi | 96 x 96 |
| hdpi | 72 x 72 |
| mdpi | 48 x 48 |
| ldpi | 36 x 36 |
Web and PWA icon sizes
If your app has a web version or you're building a PWA, you also need favicon sizes. The minimum set most developers use:
| File | Size (px) |
|---|---|
| favicon.ico | 16, 32, 48 (multi) |
| favicon-32x32.png | 32 x 32 |
| apple-touch-icon.png | 180 x 180 |
| android-chrome-192x192.png | 192 x 192 |
| android-chrome-512x512.png | 512 x 512 |
The 512x512 version is used as a splash screen icon when your PWA loads. The 192x192 is what shows on the Android home screen when someone installs your web app.
One thing people get wrong
Designers often create icons that look good at 512px but fall apart at 32px. The text becomes illegible, thin lines disappear, and subtle color differences merge together. Before you finalize anything, shrink your icon to 32x32 and 16x16 in your browser and see if it still reads clearly, and check how your app icon looks on different devices once the system masking is applied.
For letter-based icons, this usually means using bold or semibold weights, keeping high contrast between the text and background, and limiting yourself to one or two characters.
Skip the manual work
You can generate all of these sizes from a single design using the AppIcons.dev editor. Export as "Web Icons" to get a ZIP with every size listed above, or use the PNG export for individual files. The app icon generator page has more detail on the platform-specific sizes.
