The D has the largest single counter of any capital, which is both its advantage and its problem. That big open space means a D holds up far better at small sizes than a B or an R — but it also means a D and an O are separated by nothing more than a straight left edge. In condensed faces the bowl flattens until the difference from an O is barely a pixel, and in very heavy faces the counter is the only thing keeping the letter from being a solid rectangle.
Use a face where the bowl is visibly rounder than the stem is straight — the contrast between the flat left side and the curved right side is the entire identity of the letter. Avoid squared-off geometric faces like Orbitron and Titillium Web here, because they flatten the bowl into a rectangle. Shift the D slightly left, as with the B, to compensate for the stem weight.
The D is one of the better-performing capitals at 16px because its counter is so large. Its failure mode is not filling in but ambiguity: check that it still reads as a D and not an O when the left edge is only two pixels of straight line.
DD and DB stack awkwardly because the bowls of both letters push into each other. The D pairs cleanly with straight-sided letters — DI, DL, DT — where the D's flat left edge sits neatly against the neighbour.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the D until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
