The G is a C carrying extra baggage, and the baggage varies wildly between typefaces. Some faces give it a full vertical spur descending from the crossbar, some give it only the horizontal bar, and some add a downward tail. That inconsistency means a G monogram looks meaningfully different in every font you try — more so than any other capital. The junction where the bar meets the bowl is also a tight corner that traps ink.
Try the letter in several faces before committing; the G is the letter where font choice changes the mark most. A spurless G (Futura-derived faces like Jost) reads as modern and clean; a spurred G (Helvetica-derived faces) reads as traditional. Whichever you choose, check the bar-to-bowl junction at 100% zoom for ink traps, and add a touch of extra weight to keep the aperture from closing.
At 16px the crossbar merges with the bowl and the G becomes an O or a C. This is one of the letters where you should genuinely consider a different mark for the favicon than for the app icon.
GG is difficult — two crossbars facing each other reads as visual noise. The G pairs best with straight-stemmed letters that give the crossbar somewhere clean to point: GI, GL, GT. Avoid GO and GC.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the G until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
