The L occupies exactly half of its bounding box. Its upper-right quadrant is completely empty, which means a geometrically-centred L looks like it has slid into the bottom-left corner of the container. It is also the second-most-ambiguous capital after the I: a sans-serif L differs from a bare vertical stroke by only one horizontal, and in some grotesques the foot is short enough that the letter reads as an I with a defect.
Move the L up and left of geometric centre and treat the empty upper-right quadrant as deliberate negative space rather than fighting it — an L pushed into the lower-left of a circular container is a classic and legitimate composition. Choose a face with a long foot: geometric and slab faces draw a generous horizontal, while condensed grotesques cut it short. A gradient background running from the empty quadrant toward the letter also helps balance the composition.
The L is robust at 16px — two thick perpendicular strokes with no counters at all. The risk is not degradation but ambiguity with the digit 1 and the letter I.
The L's empty upper-right is the best tuck-in space in the alphabet. LA, LT and LV all nest beautifully, with the second letter sitting partly above the L's foot. This is one of the letters where a genuinely custom two-letter lockup is worth the effort.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the L until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
