The O is the easiest letter to draw and the hardest to make distinctive. It has no terminals, no junctions, no asymmetry — nothing for a typeface to characterise beyond width and stroke contrast. An O monogram in Poppins and an O monogram in DM Sans are near-identical. It is also confusable with the digit 0, with the letter Q minus its tail, and with any circular container it happens to be sitting inside, which produces a ring-inside-a-ring effect that reads as a loading spinner.
Never put a circular O inside a circular container — the two curves compete and the mark reads as a target. Use a square or lightly-rounded container instead so the O's curve contrasts against straight edges. To get distinction, reach for a face with real stroke contrast: Playfair Display, Bodoni Moda and Prata all draw an O with thick sides and thin top and bottom, which gives the letter an axis and therefore an identity.
The O is the single most robust capital at 16px — a ring is about as legible as a shape can be. Its only risk is the counter closing at very heavy weights, which turns it into a filled dot.
OO reads as a pair of eyes or as the digits 00 and is best avoided. The O works well as the second letter after a straight-sided capital: BO, DO, NO and LO all sit comfortably. Negative tracking helps round-round pairs like CO and GO cohere.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the O until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
