The Q's tail is both its identity and its problem. It extends beyond the letter's bounding box, often below the baseline, which means automatic centring places the letter too high and the tail may clip against the container edge or corner radius. Typefaces vary enormously here: some tails cross the bowl, some sit outside it, some are horizontal, some diagonal. Without the tail a Q is simply an O, so any degradation that loses it destroys the mark.
Expect to reposition the Q manually — this is the letter most likely to need a vertical offset. Pick a face whose tail crosses into the bowl rather than dangling outside it (Montserrat and Raleway both do), because a crossing tail is anchored to the letter and cannot be clipped away. Increase the corner radius of the container carefully: a 50% radius will cut the corner exactly where many Q tails want to sit.
At 16px the tail is a two-pixel stub. If it disappears, the icon reads as an O and the letter is gone. The Q is one of the strongest arguments for designing a separate, simplified favicon.
The Q's tail collides with anything to its right, so QA and QU — the most common pairs, since Q is nearly always followed by U in English — both need generous tracking or a deliberately overlapping custom lockup.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the Q until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
