The P is top-heavy and right-weighted at the same time. All of its mass sits in the upper-right, the lower-right quadrant is empty, and its single counter is smaller than the D's but larger than the B's upper one. Typefaces disagree about how far down the bowl extends — some stop at the midpoint, some drop to two-thirds — and that difference visibly changes how balanced the letter looks in a square. A closed-bowl P also reads as an R with a missing leg.
Choose a face where the bowl extends past the midpoint; a shallow-bowled P looks unfinished at icon scale. Nudge the letter down and slightly left to compensate for the top-right mass. The empty lower-right quadrant is useful negative space — a P sitting in the upper-left of a circular container with a colour gradient falling away from it is a well-worn but effective composition.
The P's counter is medium-sized and closes at heavy weights around 16px, at which point the letter becomes an indistinct blob on a stick. Stay at or below 700.
PA and PR are both awkward: the P's empty lower-right invites the next letter in, but its bowl blocks the upper approach, so the pair looks either gappy or collided. PI and PL are cleaner. Manual tracking is almost always needed.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the P until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
