What the letter T demands of a monogram

The T is top-heavy by construction. All of its horizontal mass sits at the very top, and the lower two-thirds of the letter is a bare stem with empty space on both sides. Geometrically centred, a T always looks like it is floating upward. The letter is also extremely simple — like the H, it offers a typeface almost nothing to characterise, so a T monogram in most sans faces is generic.

Making a T sit properly in a square

Push the T upward, not downward: because the arm is at the top, letting the arm nearly touch the container's top edge and allowing the stem to end short of the bottom actually looks more deliberate than true centring. Serif and slab faces help enormously here — a foot serif on the stem gives the T a base, and bracketed arm terminals give it detail. Alternatively use a face with a distinctive T, such as one with angled arm cuts.

The T at favicon size

The T is very robust at 16px: two thick perpendicular strokes and no counters. Its risk is genericness rather than degradation.

Pairing the T with a second letter

The T's empty lower quadrants are excellent tuck-in space. TA is the classic tight pair — the A's diagonal slides right under the T's arm. TO, TE and TI all work well. The T is one of the most cooperative first letters for a lockup.

Why this preview uses Roboto Slab

A sans T is a plus sign with the bottom cut off. Roboto Slab adds a foot and arm slabs that anchor the letter and give it something to be. See what Roboto Slab looks like as an icon , or swap it for any of the 900+ Google Fonts in the editor.

Turning a T into a usable icon set

1. Fix the optical centre

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the T until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.

2. Choose the container

Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.

3. Export the whole set

The editor's Web Icons export produces ten PNG sizes, an SVG, a favicon.ico, a manifest and the HTML to install it all.

Design your own letter T logo

Open the free editor, change the font, colours, corner radius and spacing, then export SVG, PNG, ICO or a complete favicon package. No account, no watermark.
