Is Roboto Slab a good choice for a logo?

Roboto's skeleton with slab serifs added; keeps the slightly condensed neo-grotesque proportions. That makes it a natural fit for Android-adjacent brands wanting more warmth than Roboto.

Slab serifs are the most robust serif class for icon work. Because the serifs are rectangular and carry the same weight as the stems, they do not thin out and disappear the way bracketed serifs do — they simply become part of the silhouette. That makes a slab a genuinely good choice for otherwise weak letters such as I, L and T, where the slabs supply the horizontal information that identifies the letterform. Watch the extra width: rectangular serifs add measurable width on both sides, so already-wide capitals get tight in a square container.

What to watch for at small sizes

The slabs are thin relative to the stems and are the first detail lost when downscaling.

A favicon is rendered at 16 × 16 pixels. That is roughly the area of a single character of this paragraph, and it is where most typographic decisions stop mattering and start breaking. The reliable test is not to zoom out of a large preview — browsers resample that far more kindly than a real favicon pipeline does — but to export the actual favicon.ico and look at it in a browser tab.

How Roboto Slab is rendered here

The preview above is not text with a CSS font-family applied to it. The editor loads the Roboto Slab TTF from Google Fonts, parses it with opentype.js, and converts the glyph into an SVG <path> at weight 700. Roboto Slab covers a usable weight range, so you can dial the mark heavier for small sizes and lighter for large ones without changing the letterform. Because the export contains outlines rather than text, the mark renders identically for every visitor whether or not they have the font, and it stays crisp at any size.

Every letter has its own problems, and a typeface that solves them for one letter can create them for another. These pages cover the shape of each capital in detail:
