The W is the M's problem made worse. It is the widest letter in the alphabet, it is built entirely from diagonals, and it has two apexes at the baseline and either two or three at the cap-height depending on whether the face overlaps the central strokes. In a square container a normal-width W must be shrunk substantially, at which point the four diagonals become thin and the counters become narrow slivers.
Use a condensed face — this is not optional for a W. Barlow Condensed, Oswald and Teko all draw a W that fits a 1:1 frame. If you must use a normal-width face, compress it to 80% via the width control; the W tolerates this better than round letters because its strokes are diagonal. Prefer a face where the central strokes overlap and rise to full cap-height, which gives the letter a stronger, more symmetrical silhouette than a shallow-centred W.
The W is the worst-performing capital at 16px. Four diagonals and two counters in sixteen pixels is not achievable. If your brand starts with W, design a separate simplified favicon — a single V, or the container with no letter at all.
Do not pair a W with anything in a square container. There is not enough room. If you need two letters, stack them vertically or use a wider, non-square container.

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the W until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.
Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.
