What the letter U demands of a monogram

The U is open upward, which means it never fills the top of a square container and always leaves a visible gap. Its counter is large and open, so it is legible, but it is also close in silhouette to the V and, in geometric faces with a fully-round bottom, to the O with a slice removed. Typefaces disagree about whether the right stem descends to the curve or stops at a straight stem — the "stemmed U" of many serif faces looks noticeably different from the symmetrical sans U.

Making a U sit properly in a square

Fill the vertical space by scaling the U up until the two stems nearly reach the container's top edge; a small U leaves a gaping hole above it. A container with a strong corner radius helps, because the rounding at the top corners visually closes the gap the U leaves. If you need more distinction from the V, choose a face with a flat-bottomed curve rather than a fully circular one.

The U at favicon size

The U performs well at 16px. Its counter is large and its shape is simple. The main risk is confusion with V — check the bottom of the letter at actual size.

Pairing the U with a second letter

The U's open top is tuck-in space, so a preceding letter with a low-right mass works well — QU is the obvious pair and is genuinely comfortable. UU reads as a W. The U is a clean second letter after most straight-sided capitals.

Why this preview uses Figtree

Figtree's large x-height and generous round forms give the U a wide, confident bowl that reads clearly against a V at small sizes. See what Figtree looks like as an icon , or swap it for any of the 900+ Google Fonts in the editor.

Turning a U into a usable icon set

1. Fix the optical centre

Geometric centring and optical centring are not the same thing. Nudge the U until it looks centred, not until the numbers say it is.

2. Choose the container

Corner radius changes the mood more than the font does. A 0% square reads as technical, 20% as an app icon, 50% as a personal avatar.

3. Export the whole set

The editor's Web Icons export produces ten PNG sizes, an SVG, a favicon.ico, a manifest and the HTML to install it all.

Design your own letter U logo
