Is Varela Round a good choice for a logo?

A single rounded weight with a consistently thick stroke — essentially a friendlier grotesque. That makes it a natural fit for a soft mark that still holds up as a small solid shape.

Rounded faces read as friendly, and that reading is strong enough to override almost every other signal in the mark — a rounded letter on a serious dark background still feels approachable. The technical catch is that rounding consumes effective stroke width: the corners of every stroke are cut away, so a rounded face at weight 600 has visibly less ink than a flat-terminal face at the same weight. Go one weight heavier than you would otherwise, and check the result at 16 pixels, where the rounding itself becomes invisible and only the reduced weight remains.

What to watch for at small sizes

Only one weight exists, so heaviness is fixed; adjust presence via optical size instead.

A favicon is rendered at 16 × 16 pixels. That is roughly the area of a single character of this paragraph, and it is where most typographic decisions stop mattering and start breaking. The reliable test is not to zoom out of a large preview — browsers resample that far more kindly than a real favicon pipeline does — but to export the actual favicon.ico and look at it in a browser tab.
